Nestled in the vibrant heart of Lisbon at R. do Crucifixo 94, Baixa Chiado is much more than your typical neighborhood cafe—it’s a beloved local haven where traditional Portuguese flavors meet welcoming charm. This cozy pastry shop, bakery, and restaurant invites you to savor the very best of Portugal’s culinary heritage in a relaxed, unpretentious setting just steps from the Baixa Chiado metro station.
As soon as you walk in, the enticing aroma of freshly baked goods greets you, blending beautifully with the rich scent of espresso brewing in the background. Baixa Chiado’s stellar reputation largely hinges on its masterful Pasteis de Nata—golden, flaky custard tarts that deliver a perfect harmony of crisp exterior and creamy filling, an absolute must-try for any visitor or local alike. Alongside these iconic treats, their Croissant do Creme offers a luscious, buttery indulgence, while the Tijeladas provide a delightful twist on traditional custard desserts that linger on the palate with comforting sweetness.
The menu boasts a thoughtful variety of traditional dishes that satisfy both hearty appetites and lighter cravings. From the savory Bacalhau Com Natas (classic codfish baked with creamy potatoes) to the intriguingly innovative Bacalhau de Nachos, each bite resonates with authenticity and care. The daily soups are consistently praised for their freshness and depth of flavor, perfectly warming on cooler days. Whether you're craving a quick Tosta Mixta sandwich, the robust flavors of Tigerladas and Pastel de Nata, or the comforting Tomato Rice, there's a genuine homemade quality present in every plate served.
What truly sets Baixa Chiado apart is the seamless blend of tradition and everyday practicality. Frequent visitor Anastasiya Ty affectionately calls the place her “second home,” drawn repeatedly by the dependable quality, the rotating trio of mains each day, and freshly squeezed daily juices with no added sugar—a testament to the café’s commitment to both taste and wellness. Macedonboy highlights the friendly, efficient service and affordable pricing, especially compared to the more tourist-heavy Rua Augusta surroundings, making it ideal for a casual breakfast or laid-back afternoon coffee break.
Whether you’re grabbing a robust espresso or latte, indulging in a Chocolate Salami dessert, or unwinding with a refreshing Bier Pils after a day exploring Lisbon, Baixa Chiado creates a sense of genuine Portuguese hospitality that is both comforting and invigorating. Richard Butler’s rave review of getting two soups, croquettes, beers, and Tarte Amendoa for just €11.20 underscores the unbeatable value here, while Justin Kramm appreciates the friendly atmosphere, great wifi, and affordability—elements that make it a favorite for locals and travelers alike.
For those seeking an authentic taste of Lisbon beyond the tourist bustle, Baixa Chiado stands out as a culinary gem—a place where quality is never compromised, the menu is rooted in tradition, and every visit feels welcoming. This is a cafe where every bite speaks of Portugal’s rich flavors, every sip delivers genuine warmth, and every customer walks away planning their next visit.
Ive eaten here so often that it basically has become my second home but with ready meals instead of having to cook myself! The food is always yummy, you have 3x main dishes per day to choose plus other menu’s you can select, soups are always on point, and the daily juice is fresh and no sugars added! If you wanna try Portuguese food away from the tourist traps, this is one place to come in, you either pay 8.50/9€ for a menu, which includes (main, drink, dessert & coffee) or you can choose a small plate (most the ones on photos are small plates) and you pay under 5€ for one of those. The staff is lovely, i started coming here about 2 years ago and it became easily my fav place! They are super quick, attentive, efficient, tasty and friendly! When you get to know them a little they warm up to you easily Filomena deserves more hugs & Jona the guy on the floor is always rushing around but always makes sure you got everything you need with a smile no charge I absolutely recommend you popping in, and do not forget to try their pastries, salame and dusted sugar laços are my faves
The Pastelaria Baixa Chiado is a standard Lisbon, local style cafe just opposite the entrance to the Baixa -Chiado metro station. The service is friendly, polite, and efficient. The prices are very reasonable especially when compared to the nearby Rua Augusta and the streets in that area. There's a lot of options for pastries and coffee. I like to have a light breakt, so went with a coffee and croissant. The Portuguese seem to do their croissants differently. More like a brioche than a standard butter croissant. Nice simple cafe with good prices.
Great little place near Baixa Chiado Metro station, really quick service, two soups, two croquettes, 2 beers and a Tarte Amendoa all for €11.20, fantastic value
Great place for a coffee, pastry and wifi. Affordable and friendly.
Very good food and they have a small plate for just 4.95! However if you're not gonna eat desert, drink or coffe, it's better to get a small plate than the normal one cause they will charge you 9.50 even if you take just the plate and a drink or plate and coffee cause it's the "menu plate price"..
The coffee shop can get crowded and busy, but overall the food is superb. Service feels rushed, but due to being busy, they have to serve quickly.
Our tour guide brought us here on a walking tour. Love the pastel de nata from here!!
A good simple lunch for reasonable prices, looks like a popular place of locals. A plus was good selection of vegetables which is above average for Lisbon from my experience.
